The Preferences Window: Extras Tab

This is where you can get optional things installed without needing a separate installer. You can also select your favorite script editor that will be used when you want to edit a separate “Run Script” action.

USB Access

USB controllers, like the PowerLinc V2 and ActiveHome Pro, need an extension installed that permits applications to access them. The extension that Thinking Home uses is little more than a text file telling the operating system to allow access. It contins no software, so it cannot crash and it will not interfere with other software.

Desktop Remote

You can operate your devices directly from the Finder. To do this, drag a device from the Installed Hardware window to the Finder. Then you can right-click or Control-click on the newly created Desktop Device to operate it.

Web Access

Thinking Home can respond to web requests when Web Access is enabled. Just check a checkbox and type in a web address.

Sherlock

Many people who have already automated their home have been exchanging a wealth of tips and other useful information in user forums, wiki’s and newsgroups. The Sherlock plug-in performs a quick search of these to find answers to your questions.

Note that Sherlock may be unavailable on Mac OS 10.5 and later.

Edit scripts with

If you create a “Run Script” action using a separate script file and then want to edit that script, Thinking Home will hand off editing to your favorite script-editing application. Apple’s Script Edtior is adequate and is free. By far, the best such tool is Script Debugger from Late Night Software.
